Universal Health Care: Entitlement

One of the disadvantages of our materialistic society is that we have developed a feeling of entitlement. For example, when our business operations don't go so well we expect the government to bail us out. In many instances this spills over into our personal lives--the government welfare program being a prime example. Please don't misunderstand, I'm not saying we don't need welfare; however, this "safety net" program is taken to an extreme when many people who can work choose not to because they get money for nothing. Now that America faces the threat of universal health I feel the need to do all that I can to prevent this "something for nothing" mentality from taking over our healthcare system. The following analogy beautifully depicts my stance on socialized medicine:

"An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before but had once failed an entire class.
That class had insisted that socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.
The professor then said, “OK, we will have an experiment in this class on socialism. All grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade so no one would fail and no one would receive an A.
After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B.
The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy.
As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.
The second test average was a D! No one was happy.
When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.
The scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.
All failed, to their great surprise, and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.
Could not be any simpler than that."

Regardless of the fact that a system like this produces inefficiency and irresponsibility to say the least, it will incur over 1.5 trillion dollars more debt in the next 10 years(foxnews.com). I SAY NO!

That's a superb object lesson. Is there a reference for it? Referencing "Fox News" is a little to vague for me, especially considering they're as fanatically right these days as most fanatically left news sources.

a few things: first I like to think that morality is more than pursuit of reward and avoidance of punishment. Also the analogy of the "socialist" class sounds fairly contrived and unrealistic. If it were true it would only show a rather dark picture of selfish immoral human nature. Socialist government does not eliminate reward, rather it is merely pursued on a societal level rather than merely on an individual level. Oh, and also fox news is probably not the most unbiased place to get facts about the current administration's policies.

I have no problem with Fox News - especially in light of recent ACORN findings (http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=0tBG8Gh5Uj0).

Rebelcellist: I don't believe it was suggested that morality is "a pursuit of reward and avoidance of punishment." I believe that is, in fact, human nature in the absence of morality.

I believe the analogy is apt given it is both logical and plausible, regardless of whether it actually happened or not. Analogies can and should be used to explain principles. The principle here is this: socialism eliminates incentives over time. That's a hard one to argue against.

I am of the opinion that the government has no place in welfare. Zip. Zero. It's a dangerous path to go down, the one where government performs our charities for us. Furthermore, it is just another form of social plunder, along with most other "social" programs (not sure what social plunder is? http://www.zionsbest.com/proper_role.html)

We live in the most fortunate place on earth. Unfortunately, the morals in our society are declining. John Adams said it best, "We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion . . . Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

To show that our government has strayed to the left - to the side of big government - is not difficult. To get us back to the center by opting out of these social plunders is a fantastically difficult feat which I personally am becoming more and more interested in.

As to Josh's post, yes, morals are slipping and people are feeling more and more entitled. The following excerpt from a discourse entitled "A Vision and a Hope for the Youth of Zion" by Benson (in 1977!) says it best: http://speeches.byu.edu/reader/reader.php?id=6162 - particularly the section entitled "Socialism Disguised under Welfare State Measures"
